Pecking BirdsWhen the crank is turned (rotated), the birds appear to be pecking the ground. This type of motion is called oscillating motion.

The the birds legs are joined together by a wire which acts as a fixed pivot round which the body moves.
The input motion from the crank is transmitted to the birds through a linkage.

Bees
This model has three bees attached to a platform that rotates freely round a central pole. As the bees are rotated, the platform is forced to rise as the red strings twist and tighten themselves around the pole
The bees are then released and the weight of the platform then makes the strings unwind, lowering the platform and starting the process all over again

Ocean MotionThis model has a series of waves resting on top of circular cams. See cams for more information.
The waves act as cam followers and when the crank is turned they move up and down and from side-to-side. The wave movement is created by each cam being slightly offset from the next one. v

WHAT IS A MECHANISM?
Mechanisms are devices that have been designed to make jobs easier. They all have certain things in common:

They involve some kind of motion.
They involve some kind of force.
They must have some kind of input to make them work.
They produce some kind of output.
If we connect mechanisms together we can build mechanical systems called machines.

Mechanisms can also be used to make moving toys like the caterpillar and the other toys featured in this program.

Hardwoods
Jelutong-not very strong or durable, easy to work with. Used for carvings and manufactured toys
Dark Red Meranti-quite strong and durable, can be difficult to work with. Used for furniture, flooring, door and window frames
Ramin-quite strong and durable, can be difficult to work with. Used for furniture, kitchen cabinets, picture frames
Chengal-hard,strong and durable, easy to work with, can be stained, polished or varnished. Used for garden benches, bridges and boats
Kapur-very durable and stiff, has campfor smell. Used for formwork in construction, hulls of boats and decks of lorries
Nyatoh-fairly strong and durable, can be stained and polished. Used for beams, rafters, joists, door and window frames, furniture and plywood.
The suitable wood used for mechanical toys would perhaps be jelutong. though it may not be very strong or durable, it is easy to work with which is the aim as we are beginners wand wouldn't want to try out with hard and expensive woods.

These two types of mechanical toys are examples of which are more complicated when joining them together. Even so, the outcome of the product is normally better than those normal ones we usually see in the market.
